Wonder Spotting: The Beauty of Paying Attention

I believe I’ve always been a wonder spotter. Years ago I even had a blog called Notice the Little Things. It’s probably one of the reasons my iPhone contains far more photos than any reasonable person needs. ๐Ÿ˜„

One of my favorite places to visit during the workday is a small pond on our college campus. Most days the changes are subtle. Then there are days when surprise quietly appears.

A second water lily blooms, this one with petals touched by two different colors.

A butterfly lands on the sidewalk, perfectly framed by light and shadow.

The window in a greenhouse suddenly becomes a picture frame, transforming the plants inside into living artwork.

None of these moments lasted very long.

All of them felt worth noticing.

I am wrapping up the final week of Wonder Spotting, a four-week online experience created by artist, photographer, and writer Andrea Scher. The course invites participants to slow down, pay attention, and share the small moments of beauty, delight, and surprise that so often go unnoticed.

The course hasn’t taught me how to notice. Instead, it has provided a space to connect with others who delight in doing the same. There has been something quietly joyful about seeing the photos, videos, artwork, and simple written observations shared by others.

It has also been a gentle reminder that noticing is something I’ve always loved and that wonder isn’t necessarily rare. It’s waiting beside a small pond. Sometimes it’s sitting on a sidewalk. It might even be framed in the window of an ordinary greenhouse. All that is required is that we slow down long enough to look.

Pond visitors include squirrels, hummingbirds, dragonflies,
and other birds not featured in this video.

If you’re curious…

I’ve really enjoyed participating in Andrea Scher’s Wonder Spotting experience this month. Andrea is an artist, photographer, writer, and teacher whose work encourages creativity, curiosity, and paying attention to the beauty that’s already around us. She also offers writing courses, retreats, and creative workshops.
