Ode to the Trees
There are some I have climbed,
others I have hugged,
some I have laid underneath,
there are many I have thanked
and only a few I have cursed.
I know the name of quite a few,
but when I discovered
the startling fact that there are
60,065 species of trees in the world
my awe for their diversity grew
We humans may think of them
as means for shelter, travel, sustenance,
even life giving oxygen,
We may have counted them, named them
marveled at their fruits, blossoms, foliage
Yet is this all there is to know?
Recent scientific studies suggest
trees communicate through
underground networks,
as well as pheromones in the air
This gives me pause
and leads me to think
that I have been missing out
on really getting to know
the trees I take for granted
